Gibran Khalil Gibran was born in Northern Lebanon on January 6, 1883. He was born into a poor Lebanese family held together by a devoutly religious mother. Aside from an extremely limited education at the hands of a local priest, Gibran received no formal schooling. When he was eight years old, his mother decided to move the family to the U.S., leaving his father behind in Lebanon. Gibran grew up in Boston where he was enrolled in an American school and exposed to the artistic culture there. Gibran went on to become an acclaimed Lebanese- American poet, artist, author, and philosopher. During his life he published over 16 written works (many of which are self-illustrated) in both English and Arabic. Gibran Khalil Gibran died on April 10, 1931.
